# Bot Mugshots API & artwork — terms of use

**Effective date:** October 11, 2026

## Scope

These terms apply to use of the public HTTP API at `/api/*` and to SVG/JSON outputs generated from it (and, by extension, portraits produced on the Bot Mugshots site using the same generator).

## Privacy

Names are **not logged or persisted** on the server. API render responses may be held in an in-memory cache for up to one hour and are cleared on process restart. See [API.md](./API.md).

## Permitted use

| Topic | Policy |
|-------|--------|
| **Commercial use** | Allowed |
| **Profile pictures** | Allowed on any platform or context |
| **Attribution** | Appreciated but **not required**; if you credit, suggested text: *made with [mugshots.bot](https://mugshots.bot)* |
| **Modification** | Allowed (you receive SVG); do not misrepresent modified art as official Bot Mugshots branding |
| **Redistribution** | Allowed for generated portraits; do not imply endorsement by xlii or Bot Mugshots |

## Fair use & limits

- The API is offered **as-is** with **rate limits** (see [API.md](./API.md)). Automated clients should send `v=1` and a stable `X-Client-Id`.
- Do not attempt to bypass rate limits, scrape at abusive volume, or use the service to harass or impersonate real individuals.
- The operator may throttle, block, or discontinue access without notice for abuse.

## No warranty

THE SERVICE AND GENERATED ARTWORK ARE PROVIDED **“AS IS”**, WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

## Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE OPERATOR SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES ARISING FROM USE OF THE API OR GENERATED ARTWORK.

Material changes to these terms will be posted at [/terms](https://mugshots.bot/terms.html) with an updated effective date.
